Morning and Afternoon Nursery (3-4 years)

Cherry Classes

Our Nursery is called ‘Cherry Class’ and we provide a safe and nurturing environment where the children are encouraged to learn through play. Our Nursery sessions are led by a qualified Teacher and supported by dedicated Teaching Assistants. The Nursery team are passionate about helping to foster children’s natural curiosity. Staff achieve this by facilitating learning through modelling, supporting and scaffolding as they play alongside the children during independent learning time.

At Lionwood we have spaces for up to 52 children divided into 2 classes, offering 3-hour morning or afternoon sessions. Families who are eligible for 30 hours funding must apply to HMRC for a code in the term before it is required e.g. for places in September the application must be made between June and August at:

If spaces allow additional sessions can be purchased for £11 per session and the cost of lunch time supervision is £2

Every day is different in Nursery but a typical day consists of…

·       A personal meet and greet at the classroom door as the children say goodbye to their grown up before self-registering and a short play with the activities in the classroom.

·       Whole class register on the carpet followed by a short teaching input e.g. Guided Drawing, Phonics, Maths or Understanding the World

·       Independent Learning Time (free flow between indoors and outside) and snack time. Adult led activities during this time are designed to support the children to develop specific skills linked to the week’s learning objectives

·       Tidy up time

·       Second whole class teaching input e.g. Music, Literacy, Life Skills.

·       Story/Home time

We have a beautiful garden and outside area where the children can explore and learn about the world around them, in all weathers. The children have free flow access to both indoor and outdoor learning environments throughout the session. We provide waterproof suits and boots for messy and wet play.

It is important to us that the children in Nursery feel connected to the whole school so children are encouraged to wear uniform, visit the school library and share the central courtyard learning space. The Early Years team work closely together when planning activities and Reception staff have regular contact with the children in Nursery. This helps to create a smooth transition between Nursery and Reception.

If you are considering sending your child to Nursery, we would love to meet you and show you around Cherry Class.
