Our curriculum

At Lionwood Infant and Nursery School we are All different, All equal, All learning.

We have strong values which are demonstrated by staff and pupils. We aim to develop in every child the importance of being kind to others, understanding yourself and others, the value in keeping on trying even when things are hard, that every child has the ability to make a positive difference, that everyone is unique and that to dare to be yourself can take courage. These values are central to who we are as a school and what we hope for our children. We want equip children with the skills they need to be make valuable contributions to their school, local community and society as a whole.

Our curriculum inspires a love of learning by providing real life experiences for children in order for them, to use and apply their learning in a range of contexts. During their time with us children are encouraged to be adventurous in their learning by experimenting, exploring, testing out new ideas and being prepared to be wrong. At Lionwood Infant and Nursery school we celebrate our successes and we also embrace our mistakes, we are growing in to resilient learners.

We prioritise the development of communication and language throughout our curriculum. We want our children to be able to express themselves clearly, to share how they are feeling, articulate their opinions and provide the reasoning and justification behind their decisions. Children are given many opportunities to learn new vocabulary and apply it across different areas of the curriculum.
We expose our children to a wide range of high-quality texts during their time at our school. These help to introduce children to knew vocabulary, enables them to understand the language and structure of stories, and allows them to apply and revisit knowledge from across the curriculum in a different context. We understand the power of stories!

We believe that all children deserve to think hard when learning. We aim to provide high quality teaching which ensures that we meet the needs of all our learners. We have high expectations of all our pupils and all staff have a deep rooted belief that all our children can be successful with the right support and challenge.

We strive for excellence in all that we do and firmly believe in the importance of the core skills of communication, reading, writing and mathematics. We know that with these fundamentals children will be able to access their education at a deeper level at our school and also beyond.

In EYFS we ensure we work hard to build relationships with all the children, so we have a good understanding of who they are as individuals and what they need in order to grow as learners. EYFS focuses on the prime areas of learning physical development, communication and language, personal, social and emotional development and the specific areas of learning mathematics, understanding the world, literacy, expressive arts and design.

Children explore these areas of learning through carefully planned learning experiences in our stimulating learning environments. Adults skilfully facilitate play and model expectations. This is where the start of their learning journey with us begins so we make sure they learn to work well with each other, communicate and are excited to learn.

In Key stage 1 we make sure we build on the experiences and learning that children have had in the foundation stage when introducing new learning. Each subject is carefully planned to incorporate the key knowledge, skills and understanding set out in the National Curriculum whilst also reflecting the needs of our children as part of the local and wider community. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and provides a framework for children to learn increasingly challenging concepts throughout their time at Lionwood Infant in preparation for them to take on the challenges of Junior school and beyond. We want our children to be enthusiastic and curious and develop in to life-long learners.
