RECEPTION 2022 - INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE PARENTS
Thank you for considering Lionwood Infant and Nursery School as a school for your child starting in September 2022. We are delighted to share further information with you here, including several video tours to help with your decision to choose Lionwood:

Lionwood Infant and Nursery School is a two form entry school located in the North of Norwich, Norfolk. At Lionwood Infant and Nursery School we have high aspirations for the children who attend our school and strongly believe in the importance of communication, reading, writing and mathematics as the core skills which will give children the confidence to learn and achieve within and beyond the school.
At Lionwood, every child will achieve their own personal excellence by making rapid progress in their academic, personal and social development. This will empower them to succeed at junior school and beyond.
We go the extra mile to ensure that inclusion is a reality for all of our children and that everyone feels valued and a part of our learning community.

In our most recent OFSTED inspection in 2016, Lionwood Infant and Nursery School was judged as ‘Outstanding’. Their judgement included:
-The outstanding early years provision sets the tone for high-quality, creative and memorable learning that continues into Years 1 and 2
– Staff have an excellent understanding of how pupils learn and what works best to help them achieve highly. The consistent application of this understanding ensures that pupils make at least good, and often better progress.
-Pupils’ personal development and welfare are exceptionally well provided for. As a consequence, they have extremely mature and positive attitudes to learning.
– All groups of pupils achieve very well. This is because teachers skilfully plan learning to interest and challenge individuals of all abilities and backgrounds.
FIRST ADMISSION TO SCHOOL
If your child was born between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018, they are due to start Reception in September 2022.
Parents need to make an application, even if their child currently attends a nursery class at the same school.

The deadline for Reception applications is 15th January 2022
We had planned to invite prospective parents into the building to have a tour and meet our teachers, however we have decided to follow Norfolk County Council advice and will be holding these sessions virtually.
We were really looking forward to meeting you all in person but we hope to still provide the opportunity for you to visit the school as soon as it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, we have organised two zoom meetings to share with you everything that is special about Lionwood Infant and Nursery School, answer any initial questions you may have and hopefully give you a virtual tour.

EARLY YEARS SETTING - OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
We are very proud of our learning environments, both inside and outside of the school building. Reception children have access to a courtyard and extensive garden area, which includes a pirate ship, sensory garden, mud kitchens and lots of flower beds which the children help to maintain. In the courtyard, children have access to larger equipment such as bikes, balls and building materials. We also have a fantastic climbing wall. Children in Reception have access to the outside areas during their independent learning time. They are encouraged to wrap up warm and dry and go out in most weather conditions. Reception children join the rest of the school at lunch time on our main playing field, which has a large green field space as well as trim trail, pirate ship and teepees.

Routines and rhythms are important to ensure children feel confident and safe in their educational setting. At Lionwood, we make sure that the day involves a mixture of whole class and group work, teacher directed and independent learning time.
We believe in child led learning and plan much of our teaching around the interests of the children.
Our school year is enhanced by extra-curricular activities such as school trips and visitors. In the past these have included olympians, journalists, Bollywood dancers, African dancers and trips to Bewilderwood, Africa Alive, London, Knettishall Heath, Norwich Castle.
You can choose for your child to enjoy school dinners or they can bring a packed lunch to school. Our dinner menus are changed termly and are on a 2 week rotation. Lunches are provided by Norse. For more information about their menu, click here.
There are vegetarian options for every meal. We have fruit available each day for children to have as a snack, as well as free school milk.
From September 2014, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to free school meals.
OUR AMBITIOUS CURRICULUM
The main aims of our curriculum are:
– To ensure all children have the core skills necessary to access Key Stage 2 by the end of Key Stage 1, irrespective of their starting points.
– To ensure all children develop a love of learning and an appreciation of how education enriches life.
– To ensure all children develop and grow as members of our learning community, with the personal skills and attitudes which will help them to make the most of the opportunities they get beyond school.
In Reception, each child takes part in daily phonics lessons to develop their letters and sound knowledge, as well as to build on their early reading skills.
We encourage the children to use phonics throughout their learning, and regularly promote phonics development within the resources and provision.
At Lionwood Infant and Nursery School we strive to make maths fun, engaging and interesting for all children. We want our children to be able to apply the key skills of learning in a variety of practical concepts to give meaning to maths using real – life opportunities and develop a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
At Lionwood, school uniform is compulsory and consists of:
Red cardigan or jumper (with or without the Lionwood Infant School logo)
White shirt or polo shirt (with or without the Lionwood Infant School logo)
Grey or black trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore dress.
In the summer, a red dress may be worn.
Our school uniform is available from Stevensons, Ber Street, Norwich (just a short distance from John Lewis). Uniform is available to purchase direct from the shop or may be ordered in school. Stevensons has asked us to encourage parents to visit the shop early, so that should you require any special orders, they will be able to accommodate these.

WORKING WITH PARENTS
At Lionwood Infant and Nursery School, we know that parents are children’s first educators and we value being partners with them in their child’s education.
We ensure that parents are fully involved in their child’s education by:
Regularly sharing children’s learning with parents and valuing the ongoing contributions to this from parents/carers.
Giving parents/carers the opportunity to take part in their child’s education and share their interests and expertise.
Receiving regular feedback about your child’s learning through Parent-Teacher meetings.
Delivering workshops to share our practice, ethos and ideas with parents/carers e.g. Phonics demonstrations and Maths Cafes
Promoting a love of reading for parents/carers to read with their child
Opportunities for parents/carers to participate in learning through celebrations
We have a fantastic Parent Support Advisor, Glenda Prior, who is available throughout the day. Along with our Pastoral Lead, Bev Cullum, she works with parents and families to support children in school and beyond. This may be around behaviour, wellbeing, parenting advice, links to external agencies such as housing and health visiting.
